How to Choose an AI Partner for Your Dental Practice: A Buyer's Guide
By Kapil Shukla, CEO, Founder · August 2, 2026
Every dental RCM vendor now claims to be "AI-powered." That word alone tells you almost nothing about what's actually running in production versus what's still a slide in a sales deck. Before you evaluate a vendor on price or feature list, evaluate them on these five questions.
First: what does the AI actually touch? Some platforms use AI to summarize a dashboard for you — you still do the work, just with better labels. Others run the workflow itself: verifying eligibility, assembling the claim, posting the payment. Ask a vendor to show you, specifically, which steps a human currently has to do that their AI claims to automate.
Second: what happens on the exceptions? No automation gets every claim right. What matters is what happens when it doesn't — does the system flag it and hand it back to your front desk to untangle, or does a real specialist pick it up on the vendor's side? "AI does the work, specialists handle the exceptions" is a very different operating model than "AI does the work, you handle the exceptions."
Third: is there a reference you can call, not just a case study you can read? A written case study is marketing. A reference call with a practice running the same practice management system as you is diligence. Ask for one.
Fourth: what's the integration model? "Integrates with your PMS" can mean anything from a nightly CSV export to live, bidirectional read/write access. Ask specifically how eligibility and payment data move, and how fast.
Fifth: what's actually measurable, in dollars, not percentages? "Up to 98% accuracy" sounds good until you ask accuracy of what, measured how, over what period. Push for a number attributed to a specific, named deployment — not an aggregate marketing claim.
The right partner will answer all five without flinching, because the answers are the product.
